Name of exchange: Chicago Mercantile Exchange |
Acronym(s) for exchange: CME |
Brief description of exchange: The Chicago Mercantile Exchange New products. New markets. New technology. The Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) continues to expand the boundaries of what were only recently recognized as the outer limits of the futures industry. The CME now offers more than 50 futures contracts within four basic categories - agricultural commodities, equity indexes, interest rates and currencies. And in just a few years of operation, GLOBEX2, the CME's global electronic trading environment, has become a leading force behind the transformation of the world's futures markets. The melding of the CME trading floor with the "virtual trading floor" that GLOBEX2 provides has expanded the trading community and increased opportunities for all participants. Each day, thousands of people worldwide use GLOBEX2 to trade a product mix of highly liquid futures, and volume keeps growing. GLOBEX2 trades in 1999 hit a new record of 16.1 million contracts, up nearly 81 percent compared to the prior year. The E-mini equity index products traded on GLOBEX2 are enjoying phenomenal growth and have drawn a new community of traders to the futures markets. The E-mini S&P 500, launched in 1997, has in just two years become the third most active futures contract at the CME. And, the new E-mini Nasdaq 100, introduced in June 1999, continues to set record volume on almost a daily basis. The CME provides an increasing array of educational and informational tools for investors via its Web site at www.cme.com - including the opportunity to conduct online simulated trading from any PC. Other products introduced recently on GLOBEX2 include the CME's first non-equity E-mini contracts - the E-mini Euro FX and the E-mini Japanese yen. Each of these currency contracts, which are one-half the size of their standard counterparts and trade virtually around the clock on GLOBEX2, has also achieved exceptionally strong first year trading levels. The CME evolved over the last century within a context of ever changing needs. Now more than ever, hedgers and speculators the world over have learned to look to the CME for new opportunities and effective risk management tools. Whether it's evolution or revolution, the CME continues |
