John Roberts Of Barclays Global Investors
Barclays Global Investors' iShares are among the newest exchange traded funds (ETFs) in the investing marketplace. ETFS, which are index mutual funds, can be bought and sold just like common stock and are traded on the American Stock Exchange along with Standard & Poor's depositary receipts (SPDRs), diamonds, and QQQs, among other exchange traded funds. iShares -- the "i" in which stands for "index" -- are offered through Barclays Global Investors (BGI), a leading index fund provider and the company that introduced World Equity Benchmark Shares (WEBs) back in 1996. Since the expansion of their exchange traded fund offerings in May 2000, BGI now offers more than 50 iShares funds indexing investment categories from the Standard & Poor's 500 to the Russell 3000, as well as a variety of international exchange traded funds.
John Roberts is director of marketing for Barclays Global Investors' Individual Investor Group and is primarily responsible for developing and implementing marketing support for exchange traded funds. Roberts joined BGI in November 1999 after 12 years as head of marketing for the Chicago Board Options Exchange. David Penn of Working Money spoke with Roberts on November 3, 2000, via telephone to find out what iShares are, and how investors can use them.
